Yamaha Gas Golf Cart Troubleshooting

The Yamaha gas golf cart is one of the best gasoline golf carts available to golfers. It offers great handling and maneuverability on the golf course. This allows the golfers to easily navigate the golf course with ease. The Yamaha gas golf cart uses a 4 stroke, gasoline, OHV single cylinder engine with a displacement of 357. This allows the Yamaha gas golf cart to do a maximum speed of 15mph and carry a maximum of 4 occupants. The engine uses a forced air-cooling system for optimum performance. Due to its great performance and versatility, it is preferred by most golf enthusiast as a good golf cart but despite the remarkable performance the Yamaha gas golf cart does need occasional troubleshooting to ensure it functions as intended.

Safety Precautions

Whenever troubleshooting the Yamaha gas golf cart safety is of the uttermost importance. The engine exhaust from the Yamaha gas golf cart contains chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects and other reproductive harm as such ensure the golf cart is producing below the stipulated exhaust levels. Also troubleshoot the cart in an area with sufficient air circulation since exhaust gases are poisonous.  When troubleshooting the Yamaha gas golf Cart failure to follow warning instructions could result in severe injury or death to the golf cart occupants, bystander or any person inspecting or repairing the golf car. When troubleshooting always wear the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) like safety googles, gloves and shoes with metal toe caps to prevent injury.

Open The Seat For Checking And Servicing

When troubleshooting the Yamaha gas golf cart properly immobilize it by switching of the engine, applying the parking brake or jacking the golf cart of the ground to prevent unexpected movement. Block the chassis before working underneath and before disconnecting any part of the fuel system. Drain any fluids like fuel to prevent fuel leaks. Also disable the Yamaha gas golf cart electrical system and use insulated tools. Troubleshoot all the safety devices like brakes, steering mechanism, warning devices and governor. After troubleshooting, the cart should be driven by qualified personnel and in an area free of pedestrian traffic, to ensure proper operation and adjustment. Record all maintenance in a log book for future reference. Also check that fueling is being done according to safety regulations.

Tire Condition

It is important when troubleshooting the Yamaha gas golf cart to ensure that the tires are in the appropriate working condition. Old tires with worn out treads cannot hold traction with the ground and this may affect the stability of the cart. Good tires are particularly important on loose ground and wet or uneven terrain as they allow for safer driving.  Check that the tire pressure is at 16psi (110kPa, 1.1kgf/) for JW1.  Also check the tire surface for damage, cracks or embedded objects. When the tire tread wears down to 0.04 in (1mm), replace the tire. When troubleshooting the Yamaha gas golf cart ensure it is done by trained personnel and use the manufacturer recommended replacement parts.

Engine Oil Level

When troubleshooting the Yamaha gas golf cart always check the engine oil level and ensure it is within acceptable levels. This should be done when the golf cart is parked on level ground. Use the oil warning light that comes on when the oil level falls below acceptable levels and the dip stick to be sure. When using a deep stick firstly clean it and stick it in to the dip hole and check the oil level. Ensure the oil level in the Yamaha gas golf cart is between the MIN and MAX marks (the crosshatched area on the end of the dipstick), refill through the oil filler hole if below the acceptable level. No foreign material should enter the crankcase and the oil should not get on the starter belt. The recommended engine oi is API Service SE, SF, or SG or engine oils labeled “Energy Conserving II”. Use the YAMALUBE 4-cycle oil or SAE 10W-30 and engine oil capacity of 1 liter. When troubleshooting also check the engine oil cooling inlet for debris and remove any if present. Dispose of used oil via the drain plug into an oil pan for proper disposal.

Forward/Reverse Lever

When troubleshooting the Yamaha gas golf cart check the forward/reverse level or drive selector lever to ensure it is in the correct position and the Yamaha gas golf cart responds in the appropriate manner. In the forward (F) position the golf cart should go forward. In the reverse (R) mode, a back-up buzzer should sound and the Yamaha gas golf cart should reverse backwards. Don’t switch from forward to reverse while the golf cart is moving as it may damage the golf cart.

Fuel System

When troubleshooting the Yamaha gas golf cart always ensure there is enough fuel in the fuel tank. Ensure the choke knob is working as it is essential for starting the engine in cold weather. Also ensure the fuel shutoff valve is in the open position for normal operation by turning it clockwise. Gasoline is highly flammable and explosive as such don’t smoke and keep all sources of fires, sparks and heat away from the fuel, fuel lines and fuel tank. It is recommended to refuel a cool engine and in a well-ventilated area. Avoid gasoline blended with methyl alcohol as it can damage the fuel system parts. When troubleshooting clean the carburetor if clogged and also clean the spark plug if dirty with carbon, wet or showing discoloration. Use the appropriate spark plug when replacing and clean the gasket and plug surfaces. Don’t damage the insulator as it could allow external sparks in, leading to explosions or fire. Maintain the recommended spark plug torque and gap usually from 0.028 to 0.031 in (0.7 to 0.8 mm). Also check the air filter to see if its clean. If dirty wash the foam pre-filter in soap and water. Don’t modify the fuel system when troubleshooting the Yamaha gas golf cart. It is recommended to only use regular unleaded gasoline.

Battery

When troubleshooting the Yamaha gas golf cart battery check that it is held securely in place to prevent the battery from being damaged from vibration or jarring. Also check to ensure that no battery caps are missing to prevent battery acid from spilling from the battery. Troubleshoot the battery terminals to ensure they have no corrosion. Check the Yamaha gas golf cart manual for the time frames to carry out maintenance protocols. The battery electrolyte contains sulfuric acid which causes severe burns hence avoid contact with skin. Flush with water and milk and seek medical attention if exposed. Hydrogen gas produced by the Yamaha golf cart batteries when charging is combustible hence allow for proper ventilation.

Steering System

Check the steering system for excessive free play when troubleshooting the Yamaha gas golf cart. This is done by moving the steering wheel up and down, and back and forth or turning steering wheel slightly to the right and left. If you feel excessive free play, or rattling sounds it may indicate loose steering components hence consult a Yamaha dealer for assistance. Also check the body and chassis for damage and missing parts. Check the drive belt for proper tightness, frayed edges or tears and measure belt against recommended specifications. Replace if belt reaches 0.95 in (24mm). Also check the trans-axle oil and brakes to ensure they function correctly when troubleshooting the Yamaha gas golf cart.

Checking For Rust And Deterioration

Fading, rust, or deterioration can occur due to exposure or ordinary wear and tear, hence when troubleshooting the Yamaha gas golf cart ensure all the components are working as intended. Also check for any modifications or installation of parts that are not original equipment as these may affect the car’s condition, performance and durability.

Yamaha Gas Golf Cart Drive Controls Troubleshooting

The Yamaha gas golf cart is controlled using the accelerator foot pedal on the right, to move it forward and increase speed. The brake foot pedal on the left is used to slow the cart down and bring it to a stop, and the parking brake pedal located at the top left of the brake pedal is used to hold the golf cart stationary. Troubleshoot these pedals by pressing on them and ensuring the Yamaha gas golf cart responds as expected. Pressing the accelerator pedal to move forward when the cart is on and the forward/reverse switch is in the required position should release the parking brake if it was engaged hence check for this too.
