5 Common Dewalt Cordless Framing Nailer Problems

Dewalt Cordless Framing Nailer Problems

There are three types of nailers (this is a powertool that helps pierce or drive through a surface with nails at a very quick speed) available namely; pneumatic or air powered nailers, gas nailers and battery powered nailers. The Dewalt cordless framing nailer is part of the battery power variety to offer the user with portability such that they can take the nailer (nailgun) anywhere and still expect the same results you would from any other type of nailer. One problem though with the Dewalt cordless framing nailer is that it is not as consistent with results, as say a pneumatic or gas powered nailer. However the nailer does at times provide the best possible functionality.

1. Nails Get Jammed Up

The Dewalt cordless framing nailer uses battery power, some 20V to 60V, to function as a powerful nail driver. The problem here is that nails can get caught up in the nail driver causing it to stop or get jammed up. Present on the Dewalt cordless framing nailer is a magazine (which is what houses and drives the nails into the nail gun to be driven once again out from the nail gun.) The magazine is where this problem is most likely to occur.

To Do

  • To ensure that this isn’t the case, be sure to buy nails of recommended size, not too small or too big, and length. Some users will buy the wrong nails only for them to get jammed up inside the nailer because it cannot sit them correctly inside it. And then start blaming the Dewalt cordless framing nailer for not working properly.
  • The first thing to do would be to remove the nail(s) that is jamming up the nailer.
  • To not encounter this problem frequently, it would suffice to keep the Dewalt cordless framing nailer clean.
  • Add a couple of drops of oil to also keep the nails from jamming as a result of too much friction.
  • Check to see that the nailer’s magazine hasn’t been damaged or deformed. In which case you would need to replace it.

2. Battery Doesn’t Last Long

The Dewalt cordless framing nailer is powered by a lithium-ion battery that is rechargeable. This problem is due to the fact that the motor on the Dewalt cordless framing nailer that is responsible for working the mechanism (pusher) that then drives the nails requires a lot of power. Sometimes when you change the nail gun’s settings to have more force when driving in nails to a surface, the result is more power consumption.

To Do

  • Always be sure that you have charged the battery to its maximum capacity before taking on a framing project. You can check the battery capacity by clicking on the battery icon button on the battery.
  • It would help to carry or purchase an extra battery, in addition to the one you already have.
  • Also purchasing a bigger battery (more voltage) would help the Dewalt cordless framing nailer perform a little longer.

3. Trigger Can Stall

You need the Dewalt cordless framing nailer’s trigger to be able to run or turn the nailer’s motor on. The problem here is that when this unit of the nailer ceases working, you cannot then use the nailer to drive in nails to a surface, the trigger may be locked or because of damage and debris stall and jam up.

To Do

  • You can turn off the trigger lock on the Dewalt cordless framing nailer. This will make it move again.
  • Make sure to clean the nailer regularly, especially after working a project.
  • If it is damaged, then the unit would need to be replaced. Take it to an accredited Dewalt repair technician for the best service.

4. Doesn’t Seem To Be Working

This problem is when the Dewalt cordless framing nailer isn’t working although everything else seems to be in place. This problem can be the result of a low battery, because the capacity left in it will not be enough to pull the nailer’s motor through. Or it could be that one of the Dewalt cordless framing nailer’s features which is the dry fire lock will be turned on. Another reason is that there may be a faulty internal connection in the nailer.

To Do

  • Make sure to charge the Dewalt cordless framing nailer’s battery fully.
  • Make sure to disengage the dry fire lock before you start using the nailer.
  • Also be sure to make the battery clicks into its compartment securely.
  • If you’re still facing this problem and you’ve done all of the above and or more, then it would help to take it to a Dewalt technician or dealer for repairs.
  • Check to see if you have the right amount of nails in the nailer’s magazine, as it may be that you have run out of nails.
  • The spring pushers (these are the springs that transfer the force from the motor to the nail) may be damaged or put out of place. In which case they’d need to be replaced or adjusted.

5. Noisy Motor

It is no secret that powertools are extremely noisy. They use powerful motors to do extremely demanding jobs or work. But sometimes this noisiness can become quite too much for some users to handle. The Dewalt cordless framing nailer also has this problem, but on this nailer it may be indicative of damage to the motor or too much load for the motor such that it cannot complete the task.

To Do

  • If you’re sure that there’s been some damage to the motor then it would help to take your cordless framing nailer to a qualified Dewalt technician.
  • Sometimes dust and debris can accumulate on the inside of the motor, to prevent this from happening you can choose to work in an area without dust or dirt, that is to say make sure to clean your work area before you start using the nailer.
  • This can also be the result of a low battery, therefore be sure to charge the battery before placing it in the nailer.
  • This problem can also be caused by another problem, nails getting jammed up, such that the motor’s gears wrestle or don’t mesh up correctly with the pusher mechanism’s gears.

Conclusion

The Dewalt cordless framing nailer is another great powertool from Dewalt, but it falls short in areas you would particularly need the nailer to excel in and I think that’s its biggest problem. It is a powerful tool that if used incorrectly or if something were to happen whilst using it, it would cause some serious injuries that would lead to hospitalization. Other than  that, it is a good tool to have especially if you like doing the work for yourself.
